Gururaja Poojary takes home the bronze in 61 kg weightlifting
Gururaja Poojary finished behind Morea Baru of Papua New Guinea (273 kg, silver) and Aznil Bin Bidin Muhamad of Malaysia.
Who both lifted 269 kg total (Snatch – 118 kg, Clean & Jerk – 151 kg) (285 kg, gold).
Poojary started off his snatch competition with a lift of 115 kg, handling the barbell with a nearly contemptuous ease.
Papua New Guinea’s Morea Baru raised the stakes with a 118 kg lift, which Poojary matched on his second try to tie for first place.
Poojary failed in his final try to lift 120 kg, and Youri Simard of Canada took the lead with a lift of 119 kg. Aznil easily cleared that mark with a 123 kg lift on his first try after Baru surpassed it with a 121 lift, dropping Poojary to fourth place overall.

Aznil then went on to demonstrate his superior strength with a 127 kg lift, but he was unable in his final attempt to lift 130 kg.
Simard performed a Clean & Jerk lift of 141 kg to reach the top, but Poojary outlifted him by 144 kg.
The Canadian beat that with a lift of 145 kg, but Poojary lifted 148 kg, matching his personal best, to retake the lead. Simard replied by lifting 149 kg in his final lift, setting a new personal record for himself.
Poojary, however, beat his previous best in C&J by lifting 151 kg with his final lift, securing the bronze.
After that, Baru and Aznil competed for the gold, with Aznil coming out on top thanks to a Games Record.
Poojary donated the medal to his wife in a speech following the event, saying “This medal is for my wife, whom I dedicate it to.
I had to stay away from her after getting married in order to train for the CWG. We got married a year ago.”
