The future of Roberto Firmino at Liverpool is still up in the air as the 2022–2023 campaign approaches. The Brazilian’s contract expires in the summer of 2022 after a season marred by injuries in which he was only able to make 10 Premier League starts.

Following the signing of a new three-year contract for Mohamed Salah earlier this month, club executives are allegedly working on new deals for Naby Keita and Diogo Jota. It is yet unclear whether Firmino will receive similar extended terms or will go on a Bosman move next summer. In any case, he is currently the only forward at Anfield without a contract that extends through the conclusion of the season.

Firmino has unavoidably been connected with moves away from Liverpool as a result of his little playing time last season, his subsequent fall in the hierarchy, and the upcoming World Cup in Qatar this winter. Juventus reportedly wanted him to replace the departing Paulo Dybala, and last week it was even rumoured that the Reds wanted to sign Rennes’ Martin Terrier and were prepared to move their No. 9 to make room for him.

Despite these rumours, according to the ECHO, Liverpool has no plans to let Firmino go this summer. He is a part of Jurgen Klopp’s plans for the upcoming campaign, despite the lack of any new information on the prospect of a new deal.

Reading between the lines, it might be simple to conclude that the international player from Brazil is leaving the Reds for free agency. After all, his predicament is comparable to Gini Wijnaldum’s and Emre Can’s previous departures.

And with Sadio Mane departing for Bayern Munich this summer, the reality of life without Liverpool’s illustrious original front three has already been starkly apparent. The Senegalese player chose to leave for a new challenge rather than initiate contract negotiations over his own expiring agreement.

Firmino has also stated openly that he wants to remain at Anfield, so club executives might not feel the need to jump into talks right away.

“I want to stay,” he admitted when speaking to Brazilian outlet TNT Sports Brasil before the Champions League final.

“I’m very happy here. I’m grateful to God to be here playing at a great club with great players, winning titles, and my wish is to stay.

“I want to be here, I’m happy here, and that’s all I can say. I want to stay.”
