Daniil Medvedev, playing his most memorable competition since quitting the quarter-finals at Mallorca in June, had sent off his return.

He said the triumph over Lithuania’s Berankis felt “altogether different” yet the result was something very similar and never searched in uncertainty as Medevedev rolled out eight straight games to go from 2-2 in the initial set to 6-2, 4-0 and completely in charge.

“My rival played altogether different, significantly more forceful,” Medvedev said, adding that it really benefited him.
