After Napoli striker Victor Osimhen was subjected to racial comments from spectators in the stands during a Serie A match against Verona on Monday, the Italian football league has begun an investigation into the incident.

Verona was given a punishment of 12,200 euros (about $12,200) by the disciplinary authority of the league for disrespectful chants directed at the fans of Napoli.

They are requesting specific information on the location within the stadium as well as the segment of the crowd that participated in the racist shouts at this time.

A correspondent who was present at the game witnessed a portion of the home crowd unleash monkey chants towards Osimhen. This was the latest incidence of racist screaming at Verona, who have a long history of far-right sympathies among their most devoted supporters.

The Nigerian forward Osimhen contributed a goal to Napoli’s lopsided 5-2 victory against their opponent.

Following racist chanting by a portion of Verona’s fanbase during the previous season, the Italian club was ordered to close a section of their stadium for one of their games.
