Test captain Pat Cummins will now lead Australia in one-day internationals following his selection by Cricket Australia on Tuesday as Aaron Finch’s replacement.

After excelling in his maiden year as test captain, the 29-year-old becomes Australia’s 27th one-day skipper and the first fast bowler to hold the role.

Given that Cricket Australia started a procedure last week that might overturn David Warner’s lifetime ban from leadership roles and allow the batsman to be considered for the position, the timing of the announcement was surprising.

George Bailey, head selector, asserted that given the imminence of the World Cup in India the following year, the announcement had to be made right away and that it had already been all but a formality.

Bailey said, “Internally, it’s a no-brainer decision; Pat is the person we want leading the team.”

“The campaign is very much focused on the 2023 World Cup. I believe we have 14 games left before that, and we believe Pat is the ideal candidate to guide this team to that event.

Finch, who will represent Australia in the current Twenty20 World Cup on home soil, announced his retirement from ODI cricket last month due to a slump in his batting performance.

It’s a huge honour, said Cummins. Aaron has been a terrific leader for our team over the past few years, and I want to publicly appreciate him for all of his work. I’m really eager for the upcoming year.

Warner, whose involvement in the 2018 Newlands ball-tampering scandal resulted in a lifetime ban from leadership roles, may be given consideration for the vice captaincy position if the punishment is mitigated following a review.

Due to the volume of games Australia plays across all formats, Cummins stated on Sunday that he was unlikely to play in every ODI and suggested that Warner may fill in for him if necessary.

In the months leading up to the World Cup, Bailey continued, “I don’t anticipate Pat to play every one-day game.”

At some point, “I anticipate that we might see two or three people taking the leadership for a game.”

Bailey said he completely supported the procedure but refrained from speculating on whether Warner may be one of those players until the appeal of his suspension.

I hope it occurs quickly because I believe that the longer it takes, the more speculative it becomes, and I don’t think that’s beneficial for David.

“I can’t speak highly enough of what he offers to the organization internally,” I said.
