Even Kohli is not safe as India alters its strategy following a humiliating World Cup loss

  • India’s disastrous World Cup semi-final loss to England, the entire T20 team may be changed
  • Potentially harming Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma

At the Adelaide Oval, England cruised to a 10-wicket victory on Thursday, chasing down the 169-run goal with four overs left to set up a final against Pakistan, the traditional opponent of India, on Sunday.

The damage was done by the opening pair of Alex Hales (86 not out) and Jos Buttler (80 not out) against a subdued Indian bowling performance that lacked both fire and fury.

In the second-most populous nation in the world, cricket is by far the most popular sport, but India hasn’t won a major championship since the 2013 Champions Trophy, and the agonising wait continues.

Disappointment, rage, and calls for heads to roll followed the thrashing.

The T20 squad will begin going through a significant change in the coming days, according to reports on Friday, with important senior players like Rohit, Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin being gradually eased out.

Although Kohli scored four half-centuries during this World Cup, including a courageous performance against Pakistan in India’s opening match, the 34-year-old superstar batsman is not seen as India’s long-term solution.

According to a source within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), “you won’t see most of the seniors playing T20 next year.”

When the T20 World Cup returns in 2024 in the United States and the West Indies, the India team may look drastically different.

When asked about the futures of his senior players following his team’s loss, coach Rahul Dravid responded, “Absolutely not the proper moment to talk about this stuff or worry about this stuff right now.”

Former cricketer Sunil Valson told AFP that against a ruthless England, India were outplayed in every way.

The former fast bowler added, “The selectors must sit down and look and work out a fresh combination.”

Former Indian bowler Harbhajan Singh recommended that India replace Rohit with Hardik Pandya as captain and hire a new head coach who has departed from the game more recently than Dravid, 49.

Sunil Gavaskar, a legendary batsman, claimed that by choosing the 29-year-old Pandya as captain for an upcoming T20 series in New Zealand, the Indian selectors had “sent the signal” to senior players.

After the semi-final, he commented on television, “There could be retirements; there are several players in their mid-30s who might contemplate their future in international T20.”

Ineffective powerplay
India is considered to be the best T20 team in the world, but they faced criticism for their sluggish powerplay performance, scoring just 38-1 after their first six overs as England sped to 63 without loss.

Rajdeep Sardesai, a seasoned journalist, claimed that India needed younger people who were less traditional.

“When we played timidly, we lost the game within the first 10 overs. Need bowlers who can take wickets and a Gen Next who bats with a strike rate of at least 150 “Tweeted he.

Dravid agreed that players had been harmed by the Indian Cricket Board’s restriction on their competing in international T20 competitions like Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL).

He claimed that many of his boys might pass up the chance to participate in many of these leagues.

But he continued that enabling them to do so would destroy longer varieties of the Indian game.

“It’s in the middle of our season, and with the type of demand there would be for Indian players, if you permitted all the Indian players to play in these competitions, we wouldn’t have domestic cricket,” the speaker said.

“Test cricket would be over,” he continued, “because our domestic trophy, the Ranji trophy, would be finished.”

Hales brought his BBL experience to the fore as he slammed seven sixes in his 47-ball blitz, having only been reinstated to the England team when Jonny Bairstow fractured his leg in September.

The opener is one of many English players who have competed in the Big Bash and are accustomed to playing on Australian fields. He had a fantastic season with Sydney Thunder.

Of course it helps, Buttler replied.
