Wasim Akram, one of the best pacers to ever play the game of cricket, is still a very well-respected figure in the game everywhere. Today, a lot of aspiring pacers watch films of Akram and attempt to model their style after the legendary Pakistani pacer. However, not everything in Akram’s cricketing career has gone well. Additionally, the left-arm pacer has been charged with “match-fixing.” In fact, he believes that he is still perceived as a “match-fixer” by certain Pakistanis.

Wasim Akram has disclosed some troubling aspects of his life in his soon-to-be-published book, “Sultan: A Memoir,” including claims of match-fixing, ball-tampering, a cocaine addiction, and the passing of his first wife.

“I probably wanted to forget. I’ve been diabetic for 25 years and didn’t want the stress. But my sons are 25 and 21, my younger daughter is almost 18, and it’s my story for them. And my [second] wife, Shaniera. They all wanted to know what happened, my side of the story, because they have heard stuff about me.

“People may talk about Wasim Akram, one of the best left-armers, Pakistan and Lancashire etc, and that’s how I’m generally seen by you guys in the UK. But in Pakistan, the rumours persist – ‘he’s a match-fixer’ – and that hurts a lot,” Akram told The Guardian in an interview.

According to a story by The Guardian, there were accusations that Akram attempted to rig a 1996 match between Pakistan and New Zealand in Christchurch and that he abruptly withdrew from the team after they had already lost to India in the World Cup quarterfinals.

The biggest error Akram acknowledges making, though, was failing to see that Zafar Iqbal, one of his longest school buddies, was a bookmaker. The renowned pacer acknowledged that the time felt to him like a “horror.”
