Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez says his team is relishing the role of underdog as it prepares to play France in Sunday’s World Cup championship match.

In the final at Lusail Stadium, Martinez claimed Argentina would rely on the knowledge gained from their 2021 Copa America campaign and the great play of Lionel Messi.

Following a surprising victory over Brazil in the 2016 final at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium, Argentina was crowned Copa America champions.

With that victory fresh in their minds and Messi leading the way, Martinez claims Argentina will face Sunday’s final against France without any apprehension.

On Saturday, Martinez stated, “When we won in Brazil, the favorite was believed to be Brazil.” We never feel better or worse about ourselves than when we hear that our opponent is the favorite.

And the same thing is happening now: France is being hailed as a clear favorite. However, we have the best player of all time on our team.

Martinez claims Messi has elevated his game since leading Argentina to the Copa America title last year. Messi is hoping to win the World Cup in his final tournament.

A terrific Messi, an extraordinary player, one of the best, is what Martinez described after watching him play in the Copa America. Even when comparing the World Cup to the Copa America, he improved.

Physically and in terms of football, he is performing better. He defeated Messi, the Copa America’s MVP, despite the fact that doing so was no easy task.

The entire team benefits from this boost in morale. As a result, we benefit greatly from his enthusiasm and happiness.
