The 2023 Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, has given American great and seven-time major champion Venus Williams a wild card into the women’s singles main event.

The 42-year-old Venus, the former World No. 1, has reached the finals twice and will be making her 22nd appearance in the competition, which gets underway on January 16 at Melbourne Park. In 1998, Venus first appeared in this place.

Williams, who holds a 54-21 career win-loss record at the Australian Open where she made her debut 25 years ago, said she was “extremely happy to be returning to Melbourne to compete at the Australian Open in January.”

“I’ve been competing in the nation for more than 20 years, and the Australian community has always given me their unwavering support. I’m excited to create new memories at the event this year and it will be an honour to play in front of the supporters once more “In a release on Monday, the organisers cited Williams as saying.

Williams, a former world No. 1, has made it at least that far nine times, not counting her appearances in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

She and her sister Serena Williams have won the women’s doubles championship together four times (in 2001, 2003, 2009, and 2010), while she and Justin Gimelstob also won the mixed doubles title in 1998.
