Lucas Barrios, a former striker for Paraguay‘s national team, has decided to come out of retirement to join the newly promoted Sportivo Trinidense local team.

Three months after declaring the end of his professional career, the 38-year-old signed a one-year contract with the Asuncion-based team.

He announced, “Lucas Barrios is coming to play for us in the first division and his contract is through next December 31.

No matter whatever team Lucas Barrios plays for, having him available would benefit Paraguayan football and help it gain popularity. Sportivo won the second-division championship in October, which allowed them to return to Paraguay’s top level for the first time since 2017.

In a career that saw stops at Colo-Colo, Borussia Dortmund, Guangzhou Evergrande, Spartak Moscow, Montpellier, Palmeiras, and Gremio, among other teams, Barrios earned 36 caps for Paraguay’s national team.
