In Rawalpindi, Pakistan captain Babar Azam and his teammates Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq scored centuries on the same day, making it the seventh century of the match after England’s four.

Azam reached his ninth hundred off 126 balls, with 13 fours (including one off the bat of the opposing team’s captain, Ben Stokes).

When responding to England’s massive first innings total of 657, Pakistan is in a good position at 411-3 to score 458 and escape the follow-on.

Shafique, who had been 89 at stumps the night before, reached three figures first with a fine single off Joe Root, and then Haq, who had begun the session on 90, reached his century with a boundary off the same bowler.

Each has now scored a century in three consecutive Tests at the ground, and both have hit triple digits in the match against Australia in March of this year.

Both Haq and Shafique hit centuries in their respective innings against Australia.

Haq was dismissed for a final score of 121, while Shafique was run out for 114.

In England’s first innings, four players struck centuries: Zak Crawley (122), Ben Duckett (107), Ollie Pope (108), and Harry Brook (153).

The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Ramiz Raja, has referred to the Rawalpindi surface as a “relic from the dark ages”
