Manchester City will continue their pursuit of the seventh English League Cup in ten years with their quarterfinal clash against Premier League rivals Southampton.

Thursday at the Etihad Stadium, City defeated Cup-holders Liverpool 3-2 in the first competitive match between the two English football giants since the World Cup.

Soon after, the Premier League champions were paired with Premier League strugglers Southampton for a January 9 match at St. Mary’s.

Fans of third-tier Charlton can look forward to a trip to the “Theatre of Dreams,” as their reward for eliminating Brighton in a penalty shootout is a quarterfinal match against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Charlton is the last non-Premier League team remaining in the League Cup this season, and the magnitude of the challenge facing the London club can be gauged by the fact that United is currently 57 places above them in the league table.

In a Midlands derby, four-time League Cup champion Nottingham Forest will host Wolves, who have themselves won the trophy twice.

Newcastle, currently in first place in the Premier League, will host three-time League Cup champions Leicester in the last quarterfinal match.

All four matches will occur during the week beginning January 9.
