The Serbian tennis player, who is vying for his tenth Australian Open victory, was unable to compete in the previous competition due to his opposition to the Covid-19 immunisation.

Tennis Australia said on Wednesday that Novak Djokovic has landed in Australia almost a year after he was expelled for refusing the Covid-19 immunisation.

As he gets ready to attempt to win a 10th Australian Open championship, Djokovic will begin his 2023 season in Adelaide.

The Australian government has given the 21-time major champion a visa, and he is scheduled to participate in the Adelaide International, which gets underway on Sunday.

The governing body reported that the 35-year-old Serb arrived in Adelaide on Tuesday night.

At a news conference on Tuesday, Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said Djokovic had arrived.

In Australia, Novak is welcome, Tiley added. I believe he is currently in Adelaide and will once again be the player to beat in the Australian Open.

Melbourne will host the Australian Open from January 16–29.

Djokovic skipped the Grand Slam last year because he wouldn’t get the Covid-19 vaccine. Since then, Australia has relaxed its severe restrictions on unvaccinated visitors.

The granting of a visa to Djokovic, who was threatened with a potential three-year ban after being deported, was announced by Immigration Minister Andrew Giles last month.

Nine times in total, Djokovic has won the Australian Open, including the last three times he competed. In Djokovic’s absence, Rafael Nadal won the championship in 2022.

In an exhibition match last week in Dubai, Djokovic said, “Over the years I’ve been incredibly lucky to start really well in Australia and I love playing there. After what occurred earlier this year, of course, I expect to receive a decent welcome there, and I hope that will help me play some excellent tennis.

How Djokovic will be treated by Australian fans is still a mystery, though. On Tuesday, Tiley informed the media that he thought Djokovic would be well received.

I have a lot of faith in the Australian people, added Tiley. “Our sporting audience is quite educated, especially those who attend tennis events. They enjoy seeing grandeur, physical prowess, and matches. They also enjoy playing tennis.

And I’m very certain that the fans will respond in the manner in which we hope they will and will respect that.
