Pat Cummins and Dean Elgar believe their teams have moved on from Newlands
Pat Cummins, Australian captain is hopeful to win tha series against South Africa. Australia and South Africa’s three-week fight could get “feisty” at times, according to Dean Elgar, but both he and his counterpart, Pat Cummins, are certain that it won’t get anything near the degree of ugliness saw in the terrible 2018 series.
Since that controversial match more than four years ago, the two teams have faced in ODIs and T20Is, but this is their first Test match clash, a format of the game that allows battles, both good and bad, more time to grow and simmer. Who advances to the World Test Championship final in June will also be heavily influenced by this series.
Both captains and their teams have claimed in the buildup that 2018 has not been discussed in the locker rooms, but its repercussions can still be felt, most notably in Australia where David Warner’s leadership ban saga has been in the news over the past week, as well as in the books written by Tim Paine and Faf du Plessis.
“There will be moments, no doubt, where there will be a few feisty encounters but hopefully it doesn’t reach the stage that we experienced in 2018,” Elgar said. ” she said. To put it simply, no hard feelings remain.
Ultimately, we both realise the stakes are high and that both teams want to win. While egos and the pressure of the moment often rise to the surface at some point, the lads are certain that they can keep it under control this time.
“If they’ve got added issues with regards to [what happened] then that’s their thing, but with regards my team we haven’t spoken about it once. It’s history for us.”
