Roland Butcher has been appointed as a new selector to the West Indies Men’s senior and youth selection panels, according to a statement from Cricket West Indies (CWI). At the senior level, he will collaborate with head selector Desmond Haynes, and with Robert Haynes on the youth panel.

Andre Coley, who took over Phil Simmons’ post as senior men’s head coach after his resignation, is a member of both panels’ third members, which are their respective head coaches. According to CWI, the Board of Directors meeting on December 19 approved Butcher’s appointment.

“Being able to support West Indies Cricket is both a wonderful honour and a privilege. In order to assure the development and enhancement of West Indies cricket at all levels, I’m anxious to begin working with the other members of the selection panels “Butcher, in his new position, stated.

When Butcher made his Test debut in 1981 against the West Indies in his home country of Barbados, he became the first Black cricketer to play for England. He represented England in three Tests and three One-Day Internationals.

He played 277 matches in first-class cricket and amassed over 12,000 runs during that time. He also spent more than 15 years playing for Middlesex in English County Cricket.

Butcher has coached the Bermuda team since he stopped playing cricket, and he also held the position of director of athletics at the University of the West Indies.
