AUS Open: Daniil Medvedev, a two-time runner-up, defeated American Marcos Giron in straight sets to go to the second round of the Australian Open.

The seventh-seeded Russian thrashed Giron with ease, 6-0, 6-1, 6-2.

The three games Medvedev dropped against Giron were the fewest he had ever dropped in a Grand Slam match.

“I had wonderful memories last year, but I want to have even greater ones this year,” Medvedev remarked.

Medvedev will face John Millman, the winner of the US Open in 2021.

Iga Swiatek upset German Jule Niemeier in straight sets at Melbourne Park to open her Australian Open campaign on a high note.

Swiatek, a three-time major winner who reached the semi-finals last year, won 6-4 7-5 on Rod Laver Arena.

The opening set was won by top seed Swiatek when Niemeier’s serve faltered for the first time.

Swiatek averted a lengthy match by winning four consecutive games to meet Osario, who responded to the German’s early serve break in set two by defeating the Hungarian Panna Udvardy 6-4 6-1.

The 21-year-old Pole will battle against Colombian Camila Osorio in the second round.
