Brazil is thinking of breaking an unwritten tradition and appointing a foreign coach, more than 20 years after their last World Cup victory and in the absence of a popular local choice.

Tite departed his position as Brazil’s president after six years in the position last month after the Selecao’s World Cup quarterfinal loss to Croatia.

Despite being aware of Tite’s impending departure for some time before to the Qatar Cup, Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) president Ednaldo Rodrigues has unable to find a replacement.

He is now broadening his quest.

“We have no prejudices based on nationality,” he stated on January 17.

“We want a well-known coach who can offer a level of play worthy of the athletes. We want to do what Brazil has always attempted to do: be aggressive.”

Almost no major footballing nation has employed a foreign coach in decades, with the exception of England, which in the 2000s recruited Sven Goran Eriksen of Sweden and Fabio Capello of Italy.

The record five-time world champions have been forced to cast their net farther afield due to Brazil’s World Cup drought, which dates back to their stunning victory in 2002 with a three-pronged attack featuring Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, and Rivaldo.

Brazilian candidates may run, but none has received a lot of support.

“We have good quality, but we used to generate more coaches than we do today,” stated 2002 champion Luiz Felipe Scolari recently.

“The new generation… has not received enough trophies.”
