Veteran center-back Daley Blind has joined FC Bayern Munich‘s defence, the German powerhouses announced in a formal statement on Thursday.
In order to replace Lucas Hernandez, who had a season-ending knee injury at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 32-year-old Dutchman has signed a six-month contract.
“We are delighted that Daley has joined the team. Daley is a flexible defender, who can play on the left and in the centre as well. He has extensive international experience and leadership qualities. I am sure he can help us,” said Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamdizic.
Blind began his professional career at Ajax, where he debuted for the first time in 2008. He joined Manchester United in 2014, winning the UEFA Europa League and two national championships.
Blind went back to Ajax in 2018, where he continued to play until December 2022, when his contract was mutually cancelled.
The newest addition at Bayern played in all five of the Netherlands’ World Cup games and has 99 appearances under his belt.
“I can’t wait to play for Bayern. We are now facing the crucial part of the season, which is about winning titles and a club like FC Bayern can win any trophy. The hunger for titles here was decisive for my decision. I hope I can use my experience to help the team,” said Blind.
The second half of the 2022–2023 Bundesliga season will begin on January 20 with Bayern’s matchup with rivals RB Leipzig.
