In the Tuesday one-day international, India’s Rohit Sharma said he retracted a “Mankad” run-out plea against Dasun Shanaka because that was not how they had envisioned eliminating the Sri Lankan skipper, who had scored a century in a match his team was unable to win.

When Shanaka, who was then on 98, vacated his crease and Sri Lanka needed 83 runs off the final three balls of the second innings, India’s Mohammed Shami raced into bowl but whipped the bails at the non-striker’s end.

Shami requested a run-out when the umpire indicated the need for a TV review, but Rohit intervened and withdrawn the request after speaking with the umpire.

“I had no idea Shami did that and then went for an appeal,” Rohit said in a post-match interview. “Again, he is batting on 98. The way he batted was brilliant, we’ve got to give it to him. We cannot get him out like that.

“We wanted to get him out the way we thought we would get him out, but that was not something that we thought of. But again, hats off to him, he played really well.”

The decision, known as the “Mankad” dismissal after former India all-rounder Vinoo Mankad, is lawful, but it has sparked discussion about whether it violates the rules of the game.

On the penultimate delivery of the innings, Shanaka eventually reached his century before concluding the game with a six and scoring an undefeated 108.

India triumphed by 67 runs to take a 1-0 series lead after the first game.
