At UFC 283, which took place on Saturday at the Jeunesse Arena, high-flying American Jamahal Hill defeated Brazil’s Glover Teixeira by unanimous decision (50-44, 50-44, 50-44) to claim the vacant light heavyweight championship.

Hill outclassed Teixeira, 43, in a battle that lasted the entire round.

“Where I came from, to get to this, it’s unreal,” the 31-year-old Hill said after the match. “Anything’s possible. Hard work, dedication, accountability, don’t let nobody tell you nothing.”

Hill recorded the fifth-highest number of meaningful strikes ever with 232, a UFC light heavyweight record. Teixeira had accrued 75 big hits at the time.

“The dude is tough as bricks, man,” Hill said. “I don’t know anybody who can take what I throw and keep going. … I heard [referee] Marc [Goddard] say keep fighting. Goddammit, he is.”

Hill (12-1, 1 NC) has won four straight matches to secure his victory. The Michigan-based Chicago-native had four of his five UFC victories come by way of knockout or technical knockout.

The 43-year-old Teixeira put an end to his professional career after defeating Jan Blachowicz to win the title in 2021, only to lose it in his first defence to Jiri Prochazka in 2022.

“In reality, I think I’m too tough for my own good, too tough for my own health. I can’t keep up anymore,” Teixeira said.

Brandon Moreno won the flyweight championship in the co-main event when Deiveson Figueiredo was unable to finish the third round due to a cut near his eye.
