Real Sociedad’s Alex Remiro built a defensive wall to keep Real Madrid at bay on Sunday at the Santiago Bernabeu, culminating in a scoreless draw.

Madrid fell five points short of Barcelona, who defeated Girona 1-0 on Saturday to increase their lead to 47 points in La Liga, due to an unfortunate outcome at home.

Madrid attempted 20 goals, but Sociedad held on thanks to a series of outstanding stops by Remiro, who secured a point for his team on the trip.

Three opportunities were lost by Vinicius Junior, two of which came from close range and were all blocked by Remiro. The keeper also stopped shots from Rodrydo, Toni Kroos, and Karim Benzema.

Real launched a potent offensive right away and produced a couple chances in the opening period thanks to the deft movements of Benzema and Vinicous.

In the seventh minute, Benzema set up Real’s first opportunity when he dribbled past three players, but Remiro blocked his close-range attempt.

Soon after, Vinicius made another opportunity by eluding defender Igor Zubeldia to enter the box, but his right-footed shot missed the target.

In the 35th minute, Rodrygo again attempted to score from the edge of the box, but Remiro once more stopped him with an incredible save.

Before the half, Vinicius had a second opportunity after receiving the ball from Benzema, but Remiro stopped his low attempt with his left leg.

In the 70th minute, the Brazilian winger had one more chance, but the goalkeeper blocked his chip effort from one-on-one.

Saul Niguez’s second-half goal helped Atletico Madrid defeat Osasuna 1-0 earlier in an away game at El Sadar.

Iago Aspas’ game-winning goal for Celta Vigo in the 71st minute stunned Athletic Club and lifted his team out of the relegation zone, tying them on points with Valladolid in 17th place, who defeated Valencia 1-0 on Sunday.
