PCB review might limit Babar Azam’s influence across all formats
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is planning an extensive review following the conclusion of the home season, with skipper Babar Azam likely to lose the captaincy in two of the three formats.
According to sources, the PCB is considering different captains for each version of the game, with Azam likely to skipper the team in only one of them.
The PCB is also exploring changes in Pakistan team management following a dismal home season that includes a Test whitewash by England.
It should be mentioned that both head coach Saqlain Mushtaq and bowling coach Shaun Tait’s contracts will end on February 9, 2023.
The final decision on the adjustments is likely to be made after the end of the eighth season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) next month, according to the sources.
Earlier, the PCB Management Committee, led by Najam Sethi, selected Shahid Afridi as the interim chair of the Men’s National Selection Committee for the home series against New Zealand, after removing chief selector Muhammad Wasim.
“I feel honoured to have been assigned this responsibility by the PCB Management Committee and will leave no stone unturned in fulfilling this responsibility to the best of my abilities,” Afridi was quoted as saying in a PCB press statement.
“We need to get back to our winning ways and I have no doubts that through meritocratic and strategic selection decisions, we will help the national side to perform strongly in the series against New Zealand and reclaim the confidence of our fans,” he added.
Former cricketers Abdul Razzaq and Rao Iftikhar Anjum are also on the panel, while the convener is Haroon Rashid (a member of the management committee).
Pakistan will play New Zealand in the third One-Day International (ODI) today in Karachi, with the series level at 1-1.
