Sajid Ali Sadpara announced K-2 Clean Up Campaign
Sajid Ali Sadpara, the late Muhammad Ali Sadpara’s son, has announced the “K-2 Clean Up campaign,” a volunteer cleanliness campaign from June to August 2023, to ensure a sustainable response to climate change.
During the campaign, Sajid would be accompanied by native mountaineers from Gilgit-Baltistan.
The mountaineer announced the news on Twitter, saying he is delighted to launch the campaign.
“We cannot close off the mountains for excursions since tourism is a lifeline for the people of GB [Gilgit-Baltistan], but we can lessen hazards and work on sustainable solutions to battle climate change,” he said.
When he mentioned the mountains as his father’s final resting place, Sadpara added a touch of emotion and continued, saying he wanted to do his share in restoring what he calls the “beauty” of Pakistan.
Hereby, I wish to step up and willingly clean up the memorial to my loving father’s final resting place and the pride of the Pakistani country, the climber wrote.
The mountaineer went on to outline the numerous campaigns he would organise and launch to raise awareness of Pakistan’s climate catastrophe.
“I’ve assembled a group of Gilgit Baltistan mountaineers to help with this campaign. I would be willing to lead awareness campaigns, training programmes, and work with public representatives to develop policies for sustainable tourism “He stated.
“I believe our efforts will not only help to preserve our mountains clean, but will also raise international awareness about the climate change issue that our country is facing,” Sajid stated in a tweet.
The young mountaineer remarked that he thinks the efforts “would not only help in keeping our mountains clean but will also bring awareness internationally about climate change catastrophe which our nation is facing”.
K-2 Clean Up Campaign
I am excited to announce the K-2 Clean Up Campaign this year from June-Aug 2023. Every climber loves K-2, but as son of soil my heart burns seeing our beloved K2, the most iconic landmark of Pakistan is being compared with ‘pigsty’. He ended his tweet by thanking everyone who had helped him in his efforts and expressing his hope that the government would play a part in guaranteeing that his climate preservation initiatives would be supported.
It is worth noting that Ali Sadpara, along with Iceland’s John Snorri Sigurjónsson and Chile’s Juan Pablo Mohr Prieto, went missing in February 2021 and were declared dead two weeks later.
The three climbers were last seen on February 5, 2021, near the Bottleneck on K2, while they attempted to reach the summit of Savage Mountain.
Sajid Sadpara, one of the three, had to abandon his attempt to reach the summit after his oxygen regulator failed, so he returned to camp 3.
