Tom Wood, a batsman for Derbyshire County Cricket Club, claimed that the team is “delighted” and “glad” that Mickey Arthur decided to stay with the county rather than accept the chance to lead Pakistan.

A second offer to serve as Pakistan’s national team captain had been turned down by the South African.

The PCB sought to employ a permanent coach, while Arthur wanted to finish his contract at the Incora County Ground, which he extended to December 2025. As a result, negotiations broke down.

“Everyone is ecstatic to be working with Mickey. He’s a big name with a lot of expertise and knowledge from his time in the game “Wood said to The Cricketer.

“After a few rumours circulated, he recommitted to the club, and everyone is relieved that he will still be with us. A handful of the lads overheard some whispers, but nothing formal.”

In his maiden season of county cricket, Arthur set a high standard for Derbyshire, who went on to win the County Championship, Royal London Cup, and reach the T20 Blast quarter-finals.

“It is a huge boost for us and demonstrates his dedication to the initiative he started at Derbyshire. It matters a lot to him, and it shows in how he pushes us on a daily basis “He stated.

“It’s a huge boost for everyone if we can match that same level of passion and intensity, and we’ll only grow from there.”

The PCB announced in a statement that it is in talks with former national team head coach Mickey Arthur to appoint him as head coach to lead the team through the ACC Asia Cup, ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, and ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

“We have explored a plan to operate as a consultant to the PCB on a time-sharing basis with Derbyshire due to his long-term engagement with Derbyshire. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons on both sides, this option is proving difficult to realise “the board stated.

Further stating that it is still looking for “the proper person to fill the role of the national team head coach and several top names are already under consideration,” the national cricket governing body is still searching.

Arthur is regarded as one of Pakistan’s most successful trainers, and that fact should be acknowledged here. Pakistan won their first Champions Trophy under him in 2017 and a record 11 consecutive T20I series.
