Trevor Griffin, who led Sydney Thunder to their first WBBL championship two years ago, has been fired as the club’s head coach after another disappointing season.

After placing seventh in 2021, Thunder finished last in this year’s tournament with just one victory out of 14 games played.

Management determined it was time for a change of direction, according to a Thunder statement.

Due to Covid, the club has been unable to repeat its championship-winning season from 2020, when they defeated Melbourne Stars in the championship game after the entire season had been played in a Sydney-based hub.

Griffin became the WBBL’s first non-Australian coach when he was hired to replace Joanne Broadbent in 2019. Phoebe Litchfield and Hannah Darlington have worked their way up through the ranks to represent Australia.

“It’s been an amazing opportunity and one I’m incredibly proud of. “It’s been a tremendous honor, and I’ve made memories and friendships that will last a lifetime,” he said. “I’m so sorry we won’t be able to continue our journey.

“The squad is so different from the one I inherited four years ago – whilst relatively young, the players have grown so much. I sincerely hope that the work we’ve put into the squad has put them in a good position to achieve fantastic success in the future.”

Rachael Haynes’ retirement means that Thunder will need a new captain for the upcoming season.

Following the departure of Phil Jaques from the men’s state team following a disappointing first half of the season, Griffin is the second coach to leave the New South Wales organization in recent weeks.
