Alex Morgan, a striker for the United States, has expressed her disapproval of Visit Saudi, the tourism body of Saudi Arabia, possibly sponsoring the FIFA Women’s World Cup this year.

Co-hosts Australia and New Zealand asked FIFA to “urgently clarify” earlier this month’s reports that Visit Saudi will be the competition’s official sponsor.

The Gulf monarchy is charged with breaching human rights.

The seasoned US forward, though, came out against the potential sponsorship agreement and described it as absurd.

“I really hope that FIFA does the right thing. I mean, pretty much everyone has spoken out against [the proposed sponsorship] because morally it just doesn’t make sense,” the two-time World Cup winner told reporters ahead of the SheBelieves Cup.

“It’s bizarre that FIFA has looked to have a Visit Saudi sponsorship for the Women’s World Cup when I, myself, Alex Morgan, would not even be supported and accepted in that country.”

The USWNT will compete in the SheBelieves Cup alongside Brazil, Canada, and Japan.

Saudi Arabia has recently made substantial investments in athletic events, although it has drawn criticism for supposedly using these occasions to “sports wash” its reputation.

Women’s rights activists have been detained despite changes made by crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, such as eliminating the ban on women driving.

Earlier, the USSF made a commitment to speak out against any possible sponsorship.

“US Soccer strongly supports human rights and equity for all and believes in the power of our sport to have a positive impact,” the USSF said on Wednesday.

“While we cannot control how other organisations manage sponsorship selections for the tournaments we compete in, we can voice our concerns and will continue to support our players.”
