Renaud Lavillenie, the 2012 Olympic champion, who was the meet director, ran to embrace him as soon as he touched the mat after a spray of sparklers went off.
When Duplantis cleared 6.01 metres on his first attempt, he had already won the contest. Kurtis Marschall of Australia came in second with a leap of 5.91 metres, and Menno Vloon of the Netherlands came in third.
On his way to winning the gold medal at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, in July, Duplantis broke the previous record.
