Babar Azam, the captain of Pakistan, has responded to Ricky Ponting, a legendary Australian batter, who praised him.

Ponting’s comments, according to the prolific batter, boosted his confidence.

“You gain confidence when a legendary player compliments you and you strive to be better,” Babar told ICC Digital.

“When such a huge player passes positive comments, it adds to your confidence and you have it in your mind that such a huge player is talking good about you.

“Because these players have been through a similar stage, they understand my mindset. They have dealt with similar situations and are familiar with the game.

“So, yes, I try to take these comments positively and to do my best.”

It should be noted that Ponting recently stated that Azam still has time to reach his peak as a batsman and captain.

“I think Babar’s still got a little bit of improvement to come,” Ponting said after Babar was named ICC Cricketer of the Year for the first time and ODI Cricketer of the Year for the second year in a row.

“I really enjoy watching him play. I believe there is room for improvement; let us hope so.

“I’m confident that with a little more experience under his belt, as he has with his batting, he’ll find the right way to lead and be a very successful captain of Pakistan.”

Meanwhile, Azam discussed the philosophy that drives his captaincy on the field.

“My [captaincy] style is that you must be honest with your decisions,” Babar explained.

“Play the team that is best for Pakistan and go with the right players.

“When you’re on the field, you have to give your players confidence. The more you give them confidence, the more you will get out of them.”

“I’m interested in what a player is thinking and how you can put him in his comfort zone.”
