Chris Hughton, a former Ireland defender who previously served as technical advisor, has been chosen the new manager of Ghana.

Hughton, whose father is of Ghanaian descent, succeeds Otto Addo, who resigned after their World Cup group-stage exit late last year. Hughton began working for Addo’s Ghanian regime in February 2022.

Hughton has held this role since September 2021, when he was fired as manager of Nottingham Forest. Steve Cooper, who succeeded him, eventually guided Forest to the Premier League that same year.

Hughton won two FA Cups and a UEFA Cup during his stellar playing career while playing for Tottenham in the early 1980s. He was in squads at the World Cup in 1990 and the European Championships in 1988 while playing for the Republic of Ireland from 1979 to 1991. Between 2003 and 2005, he served as Brian Kerr’s assistant manager for the Republic of Ireland.

He has had managerial positions in the Premier League on multiple occasions and led Newcastle to the 2010 EFL Championship. In 2017, he helped Brighton get promoted to the Premier League.
