Kane Williamson described it as “special” after passing Ross Taylor to become New Zealand’s all-time leading Test run-scorer on Monday.

As a result of Williamson’s century, New Zealand finished their second innings with a score of 483, giving England a target of 258 runs to win the second Test in Wellington.

At the Basin Reserve, the 32-year-old former captain received two standing ovations for his outstanding innings, which brought up his 26th Test century.

After reaching 29 not out early on Monday to surpass Taylor’s record of 7,683 runs, he momentarily raised his bat.

Williamson was applauded as he left the field after being bowled out for 132 by part-time seam bowler Harry Brook.

Williamson was typically humble about his place in history.

“It’s not something I’ve given much thought to, but it’s an honour when you look at the names on that list,” he said.

“I admired a lot of them as a kid and then got to play with some of them, but it’s special to be in that company.”

Former Black Caps captain Stephen Fleming is third with 7,172 runs.

Compared to Taylor’s 112 Tests and 196 trips to the crease, Williamson reached the milestone in his 92nd Test and 161st innings.

Taylor, who is now retired, complimented Williamson right away.

Kane deserves congratulations, Taylor wrote on Twitter. “This accomplishment, of which I was aware for a number of years, is a testament to your hard work and dedication to Test cricket.”

Right-handed batsman Williamson entered the two-game England series needing just 39 runs to break the previous mark.

He was a member of the New Zealand top order, which had trouble against the English seam attack, but he scored a total of just 10 runs over the course of his first three innings.

He is currently ranked 35th on the list of all-time Test leaders, which is headed by Indian great Sachin Tendulkar (15,921 runs).
