Manchester United, Arsenal go down as Chelsea top point table in Women’s Super League
Manchester United and Arsenal’s chances of winning the Women’s Super League title were hurt after they were kept to 0-0 draws on Sunday. As a result, Chelsea replaced United at the top of the standings after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
In the early game on Sunday, Manchester United and Everton drew 0-0; in the late game, West Ham United defeated Arsenal; and in the game in between, Chelsea defeated Spurs to take the lead in the rankings.
The Blues, who have a game in hand over the top two, have 31 points, two more than United and five more than Arsenal.
Manchester City, who are now in fourth position and beat the bottom-placed Leicester City 2-0 on Saturday, are behind the Gunners on goal differential.
Ella Toone struck the post in the first half in a frustrating game for Manchester United as the home team had many decent chances to take the lead. However, fifth-placed Everton displayed a steely resolve to keep them away.
Courtney Brosnan, the Irish goalkeeper for the Toffees, coupled some excellent saves with a little bit of luck to keep scoreless. Her best save came midway through the second half when she stopped Katie Zelem.
Beth England of Tottenham scored against her previous team in London, but it was not enough to stop Chelsea from regaining the lead because of Lauren James’ outstanding solo goal, which also contributed to the three points.
Jess Carter’s eighth-minute goal for the Blues was canceled out by England, who switched from Chelsea to Spurs in January, but James capped a crazy move down the right side with a cool finish to put them back in the lead.
After Spurs replacement Nikola Karczewska made it 3-2 in the 88th minute, Chelsea had to endure a tense finish. Guro Reiten, who was just named the Golden Ball winner for Norway as the country’s finest player in 2022, added a third goal.
Despite having numerous opportunities to capitalize on Manchester United’s error, Arsenal was unable to do so as Mackenzie Arnold made several outstanding saves to keep West Ham’s home match 0-0.
With a 2-0 victory against Reading, Liverpool moved up to ninth after some early-season problems, while Brighton & Hove Albion gained a point at Aston Villa thanks to Julia Zigotti Olme’s second-half equalizer.
