Marcus Rashford scored late to edge Man Utd to 2-0 win
Marcus Rashford continued his hot streak with a late goal in Manchester United’s 2-0 win over old rivals Leeds on Sunday.
Rashford continued tormenting Leeds following his strike that ignited United’s comeback from two goals down in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Leeds.
At Elland Road, Rashford scored with 10 minutes remaining to make it four straight Premier League games with a goal, giving the English forward goals in eight of his last nine league outings.
Five minutes after Rashford’s goal, Alejandro Garnacho came off the bench to seal United’s tough-fought victory, making up for his irate response at being replaced on Wednesday.
Although they have now lost just once in their past 17 games in all competitions, United’s victory was just their second in their last five league games.
Erik ten Hag’s team rose to second place, but if Manchester City defeated Aston Villa later on Sunday, they would reclaim the top spot.
More significantly, United lead Tottenham, who are now in fifth position, by seven points in the fight to finish in the top four and earn a Champions League spot.
Insensitive chants from the stands overshadowed the match. Leeds supporters sang about the 1958 Munich plane tragedy that claimed the lives of several United players, and their rivals in the away end retaliated by yelling about the murder of two Leeds fans in Istanbul in 2000.
Leeds, who are now in last place and have lost their previous nine league games, would be relegated if Everton defeated Liverpool on Monday.
Since firing Jesse Marsch on Monday, Leeds has had their pursuit of Rayo Vallecano manager Andoni Iraola thwarted by his club, while Arne Slot of Feyenoord and Carlos Corberan of West Brom have ruled themselves out of the running.
Angus Kinnear, the chief executive of Leeds, maintains that the search is “far advanced,” yet Michael Skubala served as interim manager for a second game.
