Qatar Open: Andy Murray defeated Zverev to advance in quarter-finals
Andy Murray, a former world number one, contributed to his thrilling start to the season by defeating German Alexander Zverev and moving on to the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open.
After a thrilling three-hour match in Qatar, Britain’s Murray battled back with all of his strength and resolve to win 7-6 (7-5) 2-6 7-5.
It was yet another valiant victory for Murray in a year where all four of his triumphs took place in dramatic situations.
“I managed to stay strong, keep fighting and get the break at the end,” said Murray.
“I would like to win the matches quicker but Alex is a top player and a great competitor, who always fights until the end. In the third set, I was hanging on and he was making better chances.”
He overcame a match point to beat Italian 13th seed Matteo Berrettini in the opening round of the Australian Open. He overcame a two-set deficit to defeat Thanasi Kokkinakis in his next encounter at four in the morning.
On Monday in Qatar, he defeated Lorenzo Sonego of Italy by fending off three match points and winning the tie-break in the final set.
Furthermore, Brazilian Thiago Monteiro was upset by British No. 1 Cameron Norrie 7-5, 7-5 at the Rio Open in Brazil to advance to the quarterfinals.
In a long two-and-a-half-hour encounter, Norrie generated 21 break points, 16 of which were saved, and on his sixth match point, he equaled Hugo Dellien of Bolivia for eighth place.
