Ravindra Jadeja, an all-around player for India, was charged with ball tampering on Thursday in Nagpur during the ongoing first Test match against Australia.

Video footage from the opening day of the match showed Jadeja wiping an unknown material on his finger, raising the likelihood of ball manipulation.

Jadeja was seen with his right hand removing a material from the back of teammate Mohammed Siraj’s palm. He then applied this chemical to his left index finger shortly before beginning his delivery stride. Despite holding the ball, Jadeja did not appear to be rubbing anything on it.

When the event occurred, Jadeja had already claimed the wickets of Marnus Labuschagne, Matt Renshaw, and Steven Smith, and Australia had reached 120-5 in their first innings.

Jadeja applied a pain-relieving ointment to his index finger, but nothing untoward happened, according to Indian team management, who spoke to AFP.

It should be mentioned that despite debutant spinner Todd Murphy taking his third wicket of the first Test on Friday, India’s skipper Rohit Sharma was undefeated on a confident 85 as India turned the tables on Australia.

India closed on Australia’s first innings 177 as they went to lunch on day two at 151-3 on a Nagpur track that is predicted to change more as the game goes on.

After losing his overnight partner, Ravichandran Ashwin, for 23 and then Cheteshwar Pujara, for seven, Rohit was batting alongside Virat Kohli, who was on 12, at the break.

Off-spinner Murphy, who on Thursday took KL Rahul for his first Test wicket, also caught Pujara at short fine leg and gave Ashwin a lbw appeal, which was successful.

On his overnight score of 56, Rohit got off to a cautious start before hitting Nathan Lyon and quick bowler Pat Cummins for sixes over deep-square leg.

In spite of losing Ashwin and Pujara, he maintained his composure to see out the first session with India down by 26 runs. He had the proper balance of caution and aggression.

The tourists, who chose to bat first at the start of the four-match series, were all out shortly after tea, and Jadeja was the opening-day hero with his 5-47.
