South Africa advanced to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup semifinals on Tuesday with a ten-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the group’s final match thanks to unbeaten half-centuries from the openers and a team bowling effort.

After a challenging journey through the group stage, where they suffered defeats to mighty Australia and Sri Lanka, South Africa earned a spot in the final four. They will take on England in the second semi-final on February 24.

It was a life-or-death situation for the hosts as the team just about made it into the knockout round after finishing tied with New Zealand on points but with a better run rate.

With 13 balls remaining, South Africa was able to complete its innings with the help of openers Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits, who carried the bats with scores of 66 and 50, respectively.

Ayabonga Khaka and Marizanne Kapp each took two wickets earlier to restrict Bangladesh to 113/6 after 20 overs.

Bangladesh chose to bat first, but their batting performance was lacklustre and they lacked the drive to reach a respectable total.

Sobhana Mostary and captain Nigar Sultana held down the middle of the order while batsmen, but their underwhelming strike rate left Bangladesh at 55/2 after 12 overs.

Mosatary scored 27 runs off of 30 balls, and captain Sultana finished with 30 runs off of 34 before leaving the crease in the 17th over.
