Marius Bulter could be the perfect symbol for FC Schalke 04’s current fairytale-like story.

Bulter appeared to be written off after his former youth coaches told him a career as a professional footballer was out of the question.

“It isn’t enough, they told me, and I was about to forget about a career in football on the level I was dreaming of, like everyone having gone that far,” the Royal Blues striker said.

His refusal to give up became his guiding principle. His journey took him to several amateur teams before the call from second-tier side FC Magdeburg unexpectedly reopened doors.

Two years in the Union Berlin shirt proved his youth coaches wrong, or, as he puts it, the time for his breakthrough had not yet come. Schalke then requested 2021.

Being named the “goal of the month” in February and praising his stunning back-heel goal against Stuttgart is one thing.

Much more intriguing, his four goals in the previous four games helped Schalke not lose any of the eight games following the winter break.

While Bulter has seven goals and two assists this season, the team has gained ground by drawing six games and winning two.

The club’s supporters immediately noticed a change in spirit. Optimism has returned to the former mining region, which has long been associated with tirelessly hardworking minors and football as a sort of alternative religion that has kept things together.

Over 7,000 fans attended Schalke’s most recent game in Augsburg (1-1) to witness Bulter’s late equaliser. Some supporters referred to it as “another game on home soil,” while others described it as a powerful march of the masses.

Because Schalke’s hunting journey required energy, the upcoming league break due to two internationals of the German national team against Peru and Belgium may provide a well-deserved recovery break.

Coach Thomas Reis, who joined the team shortly before the 2022 FIFA World Cup break in November last year, has instilled a new mindset. Times appear to be over for Schalke, who appear to be a team without a chance to turn things around.

The 49-year-old was able to stabilise the team’s defence and, from there, launch an unexpected point harvest that pushed the side upwards.

The road may remain bumpy, but a happy ending is within reach for a reason, one of which is undoubtedly Marius Bulter’s late spring.
