Kentucky basketball ends in 2nd round of NCAA Tournament
Oscar Tshiebwe and Spear Product confronted their storage spaces. CJ Fredrick was moving with emotion. At Greensboro Coliseum on Sunday evening, Kentucky’s locker room was silent, with the exception of a few shuffles of feet.
The 2022-23 season of the sixth-seeded Wildcats was ended by the No. 75-69 victory over third-seeded Kansas State in the NCAA Tournament’s second round.
It marked the end of a miserable season for UK (22-12). The Wildcats brought back Tshiebwe, the reigning unanimous player of the year, experienced complements around him, and a stellar recruiting class. As a result, they will begin the year as a top-five team with hopes of reaching their 18th Final Four and their ninth national championship.
However, this group’s season was marred by injuries and two shocking defeats—at home to South Carolina and at Georgia—that never came together.

Future Felines coming to grounds: Another disappointing early exit for Kentucky can be attributed to the signing of these players to the basketball recruiting class for 2023.
Saint Peter’s upset the Wildcats 15-over-2 in the first round last year. Furthermore, UK neglected to meet all requirements for the Large Dance during the 2020-21 season. In 2019, Kentucky made its last appearance in the Sweet 16. The coronavirus pandemic led to the cancellation of the NCAA Tournament in 2020.)
In John Calipari’s first six seasons in Lexington, securing a spot in the Elite Eight was practically a given. Kentucky reached that stage five times during those seasons, reached four Final Fours, played in two national championship games, and won a national title in 2012.
Kentucky, on the other hand, has only twice finished in the top eight since UK’s last Final Four appearance in 2015 (in 2017 and 2019).
Following the conclusion of his 14th season as head coach, Calipari stated, “I understand what this program is about.” Because of the high expectations, I tell players, “This isn’t for everyone,” because that’s what makes it what it is.
Under first-year coach Jerome Tang, Kentucky lost to a Kansas State (25-9) team that was predicted to finish last in the 10-team Big 12; however, it surpassed all expectations to reach the Sweet 16 on Thursday at Madison Square Garden, where it will face Michigan State.
Markquis Nowell, a guard for K-State, was the best player on Sunday, scoring 27 points and dishing out nine assists, both game highs, to help his team withstand Kentucky’s relentless attacks. He scored 23 of those places in the last part.
According to Nowell, “I was just in attack mode the second half because I saw how they were playing me.” Due to the fact that I missed a lot of dimes in the first half, they were using me as a pass receiver. I tried to be more aggressive and look for my own shot a little bit more.”
Tshiebwe was outdone by Nowell, who finished with yet another double-double: Chris Livingston and Cason Wallace, both rookies, scored 25 points and had a game-high 18 rebounds.
In the second half, Wallace, who scored 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting, demonstrated why, should he choose to declare, he is expected to be selected in the first round of the NBA draft. He scored 13 points after the half by making all seven of his shots, grabbing five rebounds, and giving two assists.
Livingston had seven rebounds and 11 points. As UK attempted to rally, he made his share of plays down the stretch.
He stated, “This group has been through a lot.” There were definitely highs and lows to the journey. We clashed with one another. We gleaned tons of useful knowledge of things about one another.”
Tshiebwe has probably played his last UK game. Despite the fact that each of the six seniors has been granted an additional year of eligibility as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Calipari stated that he does not anticipate any of them returning. Furthermore, Kentucky is inviting the No. one recruiting class nationwide.
Tshiebwe’s individual accomplishments at Kentucky over the past two seasons could fill a binder, but the team’s lack of success—no regular-season or conference tournament championships, only one NCAA Tournament victory—was all he was thinking about.
Tshiebwe said, “I’m sorry to the BBN (Big Blue Nation), but I came here to do something great.” It did not occur two years later.”
