Manchester United advanced to the Europa League quarter-finals with a 1-0 win at Real Betis in the last-16 second leg on Thursday, completing a 5-1 aggregate victory.

As the Spanish team huffed and puffed to little effect and exited with a whimper, the English side meticulously protected the comfortable lead they established at Old Trafford.

Juanmi missed a close-range sitter early in the first half, which could have changed the script as a packed Benito Villamarin stadium urged their team to try to erase a three-goal deficit.

United goalkeeper David de Gea dived full stretch to deny 41-year-old Joaquin’s long-range effort, before Facundo Pellistri hit the post with a close-range strike for the visitors.

Soon after halftime, De Gea made an incredible reflex save to keep out a header, but United gradually took control of the game.

Rashford squandered a simple opportunity but quickly made amends, slotting a fine long-range strike inside the left post in the 55th minute.

Juventus defeated 10-man Freiburg 2-0 in Germany to advance 3-0 on aggregate.

After Freiburg defender Manuel Gudel was sent off for using his hands to prevent Adrien Rabiot from scoring, Dusan Vlahovic scored from the penalty spot just before halftime.

The Italians dominated the second half and extended their lead five minutes into extra time thanks to Federico Chiesa.

Feyenoord thrashed Shakhtar Donetsk 7-1 in the Netherlands to advance 8-2 on aggregate, with captain Orkun Kokcu and forward Oussama Idrissi each scoring twice.

In Turkey, Sevilla had to dig deep against Fenerbahce, who won the second leg 1-0 thanks to Enner Valencia’s penalty, but the Spanish side advanced to the last eight 2-1 on aggregate.
