Newcastle defeated Wolves at St. James’ Park in a hard-fought victory, reigniting their pursuit of a top-four Premier League finish.

With 12 minutes remaining, substitute Miguel Almiron scored the winner to lift Newcastle above Liverpool into fifth place on goal difference and within four points of fourth-placed Tottenham, who have played two more games.

Another substitute, Hwang Hee-chan, equalized for Wolves seconds after coming on to cancel out Alexander Isak’s towering first-half header.

The Newcastle goalkeeper appeared to take down Raul Jimenez six minutes before Isak’s opening goal, but referee Andy Madley ignored Wolves’ appeals, and the team will feel vindicated that Pope was not given a penalty and not dismissed.

Pope continued to make some excellent saves to keep Julen Lopetegui’s team from scoring, keeping them in 13th place and preventing them from moving six points clear of the relegation zone.
