PSL 2023: Simon Doull criticises Rizwan for slow batting
Former New Zealand fast bowler Simon Doull, who is currently commentating in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 8, chastised Mohammad Rizwan for his slow batting approach against Lahore Qalandars during their qualifier match.
Multan Sultans skipper Rizwan opened the batting with Usman Khan in the qualifying match at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Wednesday. The right-handed batter struck out in the 14th over after scoring 33 runs on 29 balls. His inning featured only three home runs.
“33 off 29 balls and he got out in 14th over. It’s just not acceptable,” Doull described Rizwan’s innings during commentary. “He didn’t hit a boundary in 10 overs. His last boundary was in third over of the match. You have got to take more risks there,” he advised.
Rizwan finished with a strike rate of 113.79.
Previously, Doull was heavily chastised for raising concerns about Babar Azam’s strike rate.
During this year’s PSL, Babar scored his first PSL century against the Quetta Gladiators. He finished with a 115 on 65 balls. He got to fifty with a maximum, taking 32 balls, and then another 28 to get to a tonne.
Doull questioned Babar’s batting approach while completing his century while describing this inning.
“The last little while, that’s all that has been happening rather than looking for boundaries still, when you’ve got so much firepower to come [Mohammad Haris, Haseebullah Khan and all-rounder Aamer Jamal were waiting in the wings],” he had said.
“Hundreds are great, stats are brilliant, but it still must be team first,” he added.
Doull’s comments sparked outrage on social media, with fans criticising the former cricketer for his views.
