World Test Championship: New Zealand beat Sri Lanka after an exciting finish
In a thrilling game on Monday in Christchurch, New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka, enabling India to go to the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2021–23 final.
To win the first Test in a two-match series, the home team just required one run off the penultimate ball of the final day. Sri Lanka needed to defeat New Zealand in both of its Test matches in order to advance to the WTC final.
Unfortunately, Sri Lanka’s opportunity to play in their first WTC final was taken away by Kane Williamson’s century in a rain-drenched first Test of the series. The Kiwis defeated the visitors by two wickets on the last day thanks in large part to Williamson’s 121 not out.
India’s place in the ICC WTC final was assured by New Zealand’s thrilling victory in the first Test. From June 7 to 11, they will play Australia in the championship game at The Oval in London.
India defeated Australia in a four-match Test series, 2-1, in the meantime. India took a 2-0 series lead after winning the first two Test matches. Australia, however, came back to win the third match, making the fourth Test the series finale.
The fourth Test between India and Australia finished in a draw on Monday, giving the home team the series victory and a place in second place on the ICC WTC points chart.
India will participate in its second consecutive ICC WTC final. They competed against New Zealand in Southampton’s ICC WTC 2019–21 in 2021. To win the first ICC WTC championship, the Kiwis defeated India by an eight-wicket margin.
