Zaka Ashraf took over as chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) newly formed interim management committee on Thursday. The officials at the PCB headquarters in Lahore warmly welcomed Mr. Ashraf, who will chair the committee’s first meeting later today.

The federal cabinet had approved the committee in a summary circulated the day before. The 10-member committee has been granted authority to manage cricket affairs for a period of four months.

The committee comprises Kaleem Ullah Khan, Ashfaq Akhtar, Musaddiq Islam, Zaheer Abbas, Khurram Karim Somroo, Azmat Parvez, Khuwaja Nadeem, Zulfiqar Malik, and Mustafa Ramday.

Additionally, Mahmood Iqbal has been appointed as the PCB’s chief election commissioner, replacing Ahmed Shehzad Farooq Rana.

Zaka Ashraf replaces former PCB chief Najam Sethi, who stepped down from his position in an effort to end the confrontation between the PML-N and PPP. On July 3, the Lahore High Court (LHC) lifted its stay order and allowed elections for the PCB chairman position, which had been scheduled for June 27.

During the court hearing, a petitioner argued against the election commissioner’s changes to the board of governors formed by the interim management committee.

The petitioner requested that the court declare the election commissioner’s actions illegal and void the formation of the new board of governors.

The PCB’s lawyer informed the court that several petitions against the elections were pending with Justice Shahid Karim, who had not yet issued a verdict.

Subsequently, Justice Anwar withdrew the stay order and referred the matter to the LHC chief justice, urging the consolidation of all cases related to the PCB chairman’s elections.

Earlier, on June 27, the Balochistan High Court also halted the PCB from conducting elections for the chairman’s position.
