Former President of the Spanish Football Association (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, has been handed a three-year ban from all football-related activities by FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee.

This decision follows his controversial actions during the FIFA Women’s World Cup final in Sydney on August 20, 2023, which had already led to his provisional suspension for 90 days.

FIFA’s disciplinary measures stem from Rubiales’ violation of Article 13 of their disciplinary code. The incident in question involved an unwanted kiss on the lips given to Spain’s Women’s World Cup champion, Jennifer Hermoso, during the awards ceremony. Additionally, Rubiales faced criticism for carrying Spain player Athenea del Castillo over his shoulder during post-match celebrations.

The 46-year-old Spaniard had resigned from his position as president of the Spanish soccer federation and vice president of UEFA due to the intense backlash he received following the incident with Jennifer Hermoso.

The FIFA statement reads, “Rubiales has been notified of the terms of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee’s decision today. In accordance with the relevant provisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, he has 10 days in which to request a motivated decision, which, if requested, would subsequently be published on legal.fifa.com. The decision remains subject to a possible appeal before the FIFA Appeal Committee.”

During Rubiales’ provisional suspension, Pedro Rocha had taken over the role as interim president of the RFEF. The ban on Rubiales sends a strong message about FIFA’s commitment to maintaining a respectful and professional environment in the world of football.
