In a thrilling match at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, India, Afghanistan’s cricket team achieved a historic milestone by defeating Pakistan by eight wickets in a One-Day International (ODI) clash.

This victory marks the first time Afghanistan has ever defeated Pakistan in ODI cricket, solidifying their growing presence in the international cricket scene.

Afghanistan’s incredible performance not only secured their first-ever win over the Green Shirts but also propelled them to the sixth position in the World Cup points table. Led by their star players, Afghanistan showcased their prowess with the bat and ball to secure a commanding victory.

Batting Brilliance:

Afghanistan’s batting display was led by Ibrahim Zadran, who scored an impressive 87, and Rahmat Shah, who remained unbeaten with 77 runs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz also played a vital role in the chase, contributing 65 runs. Hashmatullah Shahidi added 48* to the tally. Together, they ensured that Afghanistan reached the target of 283 set by Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Innings:

Pakistan, choosing to bat first, managed to post a competitive total of 283. Captain Babar Azam and opener Abdullah Shafique both played crucial roles, each scoring half-centuries. However, the turning point of the innings came when Afghanistan’s teenage leg spinner Noor Ahmad picked up two crucial wickets, putting the brakes on Pakistan’s progress. Iftikhar Ahmed and Shadab Khan chipped in with 40 runs each to rescue the team from a minor collapse when they found themselves at 163 runs for the loss of four wickets.

Historic Victory Chase:

Afghanistan’s pursuit of Pakistan’s target began with a bang as Ibrahim and Gurbaz built a formidable 130-run partnership. Shaheen Afridi managed to break this partnership by dismissing Ibrahim, who achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the fastest Afghan batsman to reach 1000 runs in ODIs during this innings. Later, Hasan Ali claimed the wicket of Ibrahim, but Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi remained resolute, guiding Afghanistan to a historic victory.

Next Matches:

With this victory, Afghanistan now stands with two wins and three defeats in the tournament. Their next challenge will be against Sri Lanka on October 30 in Lucknow. Meanwhile, Pakistan, with two wins and three defeats, is set to face South Africa at the same venue on October 27. Cricket fans around the world eagerly await these upcoming matches to witness more action-packed contests.

Afghanistan’s historic victory over Pakistan in ODI cricket is not only a testament to their growing cricketing prowess but also a moment of national pride for the Afghan team and their passionate supporters. It marks a significant milestone in their cricketing journey, and they will be looking to build on this achievement in the future.
