Glenn Maxwell finally showed his potential at the ICC World Cup 2023 after a series of low scores, delivering the fastest-ever World Cup century in just 40 balls to power Australia to a commanding total of 399 for 8 against the Netherlands at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Maxwell’s remarkable performance came after he had faced heavy criticism for his dismissal in the last match against Pakistan. However, he silenced his critics with a dazzling display of strokeplay, hitting eight sixes and nine fours on his way to 106 runs.

Maxwell entered the game during the 39th over, right after Australia had lost the wicket of Josh Inglish. However, the combined efforts of David Warner and Steve Smith had already placed Australia in a dominant position, reaching 266/4 with 11 overs remaining to play.

Maxwell took the attack to the Dutch bowlers from the very start, smashing boundaries at will. He reached his century off just 40 balls, the fastest ever in a World Cup match. His knock helped Australia post a mammoth total of 399 for 8, which was eventually too much for the Netherlands to chase.

Maxwell’s performance was a welcome relief for Australia, who had been struggling to find consistency in the tournament. His century will give the team a much-needed boost ahead of the knockout stages.
