With the Test series against Pakistan commencing in Perth on December 14, Australia is preparing to host the summer of 2023.

Selectors will meet this week to finalize the roster, according to Australian media. Test captain Pat Cummins stated that the selection process will take place following this week’s Sheffield Shield games, which are currently underway, during an event held at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) with the ODI World Cup trophy.

In the interim, he also discussed opener David Warner, who hinted during the Ashes series that the Pakistan series might be his final Test match.

“David Warner is one of our greatest cricketers and if he wants to play his farewell Test at the SCG, he deserves to play at his home ground,” Cummins stated.

However, the 30-year-old claimed that cricket players were “not robots” in light of his nation’s T20 team’s struggles in India immediately following their victory in the 50-over World Cup.

Four days after the World Cup final on November 19, a five-match Twenty20 series began in India, with seven members of the winning Australian team staying behind.

The first two games were won by a subpar Indian team; reports from Australia said that Ben McDermott, Josh Philippe, and Chris Green were among the replacements sent to relieve the struggling World Cup heroes.

Given that the players—some of whom have been playing in India since September—had a hectic domestic cricket summer ahead of them, including Test matches against Pakistan and the West Indies, Cummins acknowledged the strain on them.

“They’re humans, they’re not robots,” he told reporters at the Sydney Cricket Ground. “Putting everything into a World Cup and then playing a couple of days later — I probably don’t begrudge them if they’re not at 100 percent.”

The skipper added: “These are still games for Australia and it’s great that these tours do provide opportunities for some of the younger guys, or guys who might not be in the first eleven.”I think these are important tours and you can get a lot out of them.”

Prior to Melbourne’s Boxing Day match, on December 14, Perth will host the first Test against Pakistan. Sydney Cricket Ground will host the third and final Test starting on January 3, 2024.
