In a high-scoring World Cup clash at Eden Gardens, Pakistan’s fast bowler Haris Rauf found himself in the record books for all the wrong reasons, conceding the most runs in a single edition of the tournament. Despite an impressive tally of 15 wickets in nine innings, Rauf’s economy rate of 6.74 proved costly, as he surpassed the previous record held by England’s Adil Rashid.

Defending champions England posted a formidable total of 337 runs against Pakistan, with key contributions from opening pair Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow, along with a strong middle-order partnership between Joe Root and Ben Stokes.

Rauf’s unwanted record saw him concede a total of 533 runs in the tournament, eclipsing Rashid’s 2019 record of 526 runs. Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka finished just one run behind Rauf, with 525 runs in nine innings.

Despite Rauf’s struggles, England’s batting display established a solid foundation, with contributions from multiple players, including a late surge from skipper Jos Buttler and Harry Brook.

In response, Pakistan faced an uphill battle, chasing a challenging target. While Rauf managed to take three wickets, England’s bowlers, led by Ben Stokes and Adil Rashid, limited Pakistan’s progress. The playing XIs for both teams featured notable names, with England’s Bairstow, Root, Stokes, and Buttler showcasing their prowess, while Pakistan’s Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, and Mohammad Rizwan faced a daunting task in pursuit of the target.

As the World Cup drama unfolds, Rauf’s record will undoubtedly be a talking point, emphasizing the fine balance between individual achievements and the overall team performance on the grand stage of international cricket.
