In a strategic move to make a return to the national squad, veteran Pakistani batsman Shoaib Malik has joined the Sialkot Region for the upcoming National T20 Cup, set to commence on November 24. The 41-year-old, with an illustrious cricket career, is eyeing a spot in the Pakistan national cricket team for the 2024 World Cup.

According to media reports, Malik, who recently terminated his contract with the New York Strikers for the 2024 season of the Abu Dhabi T10 league, is keen on showcasing his skills in the domestic arena to secure a coveted spot in the national team. The seasoned cricketer intends to captain the Sialkot Region in the T20 tournament, drawing inspiration from his past successes with the Sialkot Stallions in various National T20 Cups.

In preparation for the domestic T20 Cup, Malik is scheduled to participate in a practice match, underlining his commitment to making a significant impact. However, during a recent interaction with the media, Malik emphasized the need for clarity from cricket authorities regarding his potential selection.

“If I will be given clarity and will be asked to play, then I will definitely consider,” stated Malik, indicating that clear communication from the cricketing authorities would play a crucial role in his decision to return to the national squad.

While there’s speculation about Malik’s motivation being solely centered around the 2024 World Cup, the all-rounder clarified, “It isn’t like I am playing cricket because I want to play in the 2024 World Cup. I am playing cricket because I enjoy playing cricket and I can play cricket.”

The National T20 Cup 2023 is scheduled to kick off on November 24, running until December 10 in Karachi. With 18 teams participating, divided into four groups, the tournament will feature a total of 63 T20 matches. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eight stage, followed by the semi-finals and the final on December 10.

The NBP Sports Complex, UBL Sports Complex, National Bank Stadium, and State Bank of Pakistan Sports Complex will host all matches of the T20 tournament. Sindh emerged victorious in the previous edition of the National T20 Cup in September 2022, defeating Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by eight wickets in the final.
