Steve Harmison says ‘Show some leadership and send Ben Stokes home’
Former England pacer Steve Harmison has called on the England cricket team to send all-rounder Ben Stokes home from the ICC World Cup 2023, despite the ongoing tournament. Harmison believes that Stokes is too important to the England Test team to risk further injury by keeping him in India for the World Cup, especially with England’s campaign already effectively over.
“I am amazed Ben is still in the country, I don’t see any point in him being there,” Harmison said
He argued that England’s priority should be to protect Stokes for the upcoming five-match Test series against India, which starts in January.
“The single most important person in that Test setup is Ben Stokes. They need their leader and that’s why he has to go home,” said Harmison.
Harmison acknowledged that England are still in contention for the 2025 Champions Trophy qualification, but he believes that Stokes is more valuable to the team in the longer format.
“This tour is going to be twice as hard as the Ashes given the conditions, so he’s going to be more important than ever.”
England are currently out of the World Cup after losing six matches, but they can still qualify for the 2025 ICC event if they win their remaining two matches with a decent net run rate (NRR).
