The recruitment of former cricket players Kamran Akmal, Rao Iftikhar Anjum, and Salman Butt as consultant members to the recently appointed head selector, Wahab Riaz, was confirmed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday.

The three members will assume responsibility for their responsibilities immediately, according to a press release from the PCB. Their first assignment will be to manage the five-match T20I series against New Zealand.

The cricket board issued a brief statement saying, “The PCB has confirmed the appointment of former Pakistan cricketers Kamran Akmal, Rao Iftikhar Anjum, and Salman Butt as consultant members to chief selector Wahab Riaz.”

“The three have assumed their responsibilities on the selection panel with immediate effect. Their first assignment as consultant members to the chief selector includes the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, set to commence on January 12, 2024, following the conclusion of the Test tour to Australia.

“When not engaged in selection duties, the consultant members may be assigned additional tasks, such as conducting skills camps.”

The Pakistani team that won the 2009 T20 World Cup at Lord’s included Kamran Akmal. In 268 international appearances, the wicketkeeper-batsman played for the Green Shirts. He scored 6,871 runs in all formats, amassing 11 tons and 27 half-centuries.

Salman Butt, a former left-handed opener who scored 5,209 runs across formats with 11 centuries and 27 fifty wickets, donned Pakistan’s shirt in 135 international matches.

Rao Iftikhar’s career with Pakistan was brief; in just 65 international matches, the right-handed medium pacer managed to claim 78 wickets in various formats for his nation.

It should be mentioned that the PCB has been quite busy since November due to several significant changes, including a shift in the staff and management.

It all began on November 15, when Babar Azam announced his resignation as captain of both formats after meeting with Zaka Ashraf, the chairman of the PCB, and learning that his only offer was to retain the captaincy for Test matches.

The PCB chose new captains for Test and T20I cricket shortly after he resigned, with Shaheen Afridi and Shan Masood leading their respective formats.

Subsequently, the PCB named former cricket player Mohammad Hafeez the team’s director and head selector, Wahab Riaz.

Former bowler Sohail Tanveer was selected as head of the junior selection committee, and Pakistan’s U-19 team’s great batsman Mohammad Yousuf was tasked with leading the team.
